TrustedID Ratings

It doesn’t get much cheaper than free. TrustedID Premier is an Equifax service that’s offered free of charge. In 2017, Equifax succumbed to a data-breach that leaked the personal info of millions of people. So they acquired TrustedID to help clean up the mess. The service is lean with limited features, but hey, you get what you pay for. Also, there’s the trust factor at play some people don’t want to deal with a company that has suffered a major breach. See what our experts say in our TrustedID review.

PROS
  • Free due to Equifax’s massive data breach
  • Offers a credit report and score
  • Monitors the essential data points
  • Mobile credit locking

CONS
  • You may not want to trust your identity monitoring to a company that has suffered a major data breach
  • No social media monitoring

Overview

Equifax suffered from a data breach that impacted more than 145 million people. Driver license numbers, social security numbers, credit card numbers and other personal information was included in this breach. As part of its recovery efforts, the company is offering a free one-year subscription to the TrustedID Premier product. Equifax operates in 24 countries and has more than 10,400 employees.

TrustedID was acquired by Equifax in 2013. The company’s founders both suffered from identity theft and wanted to create a solution that could help people that were in the situation they found themselves in. This Palo Alto, California based company was started by Omar Ahmad and Scott Mitjc.

TrustedID Premier focuses on the basics that a consumer needs in the event of identity theft. While it’s not as feature-rich or advanced as other identity protection services, it works well if you’re interested in seeing how this type of solution works or you’d like to see the information contained on your Equifax credit report.

Features & Services

Equifax Credit Report

You have full access to your Equifax credit report, which is useful for watching for potential signs of identity theft and looking at your credit accounts. You can also learn a lot about your financial health by accessing this report.

Three Bureau Monitoring

In addition to having the reports from their agency monitored, TrustedID also watches Experian and TransUnion, as information doesn’t always end up reporting to all three of the reporting agencies at the same time.

Equifax Credit Report Lock

You can lock down your credit report through a one touch mobile button if you suspect identity theft. Equifax uses a secure system for confirming your identity during this process so they know that it’s you requesting the lock.

Social Security Number Monitoring

Don’t let your social security number get used all over the place for everything from utilities to employment offers. Find out what’s going on with it through this feature and protect your personal information.

$1 Million Identity Theft Insurance

You’re covered for up to $1 million in the event that you have your identity stolen. After all, it’s not cheap to undo the damage caused by a criminal.

Lost Wallet Assistance

Get help with cancelling the cards in your wallet if you end up losing it.

Equifax Credit Score

Do you plan on taking out a loan, opening up a credit card or renting an apartment? You can peek at your Equifax credit score to find out where you stand.

Internet Scanning

TrustedID scans the Internet to see whether your insurance policy, social security number, passport, credit card or bank account information is published. Equifax tracks your social security number, 10 medical ID numbers, 5 passport numbers, 6 credit cards and debit cards, and 5 bank accounts.

Financial Alerts

You can get alerted to suspicious behavior on your bank and credit card accounts with this feature.

Email and SMS Alerts

You receive instant notification when TrustedID detects any of the following situations: new accounts opened, credit report inquiries, changed addresses, new public records, changes to your accounts.

Ease of Use

TrustedID has a straightforward panel that details the notifications and shows you your credit report and score. If you need to lock your report via your smartphone, the app to do this is incredibly easy to use. All in all, this is a friendly service for people who are completely new to identity protection solutions.

Customer Service

Unlike many other identity protection services, TrustedID does not offer the dedicated help of a resolution specialist if you find out that someone is using your identity. You do have coverage for up to $1 million in fraud and associated costs of dealing with identity theft, but you’re unable to give TrustedID limited power of attorney to take care of many of the details for you. With that said, you do have 24/7 access to customer service for the assistance that they do make available.

Value

Equifax is currently offering their TrustedID Premier service for free, with the intention to provide identity protection and monitoring services for the millions of people who were compromised by the credit bureau’s data breach.

TrustedID Premier was previously a paid product that was turned into a free service. It offers basic credit and identity theft monitoring, although it lacks a lot of features that are considered standard in the identity protection market. You receive up to $1 million in identity theft insurance if you’re the victim of this type of theft after you sign up with TrustedID.

Summary

TrustedID Premier covers the basics well and has the advantage of being freely available by Equifax for a year. However, you receive limited assistance with restoring your identity if it gets stolen, so you should be aware of the level of customer support prior to making a sign-up decision.
