Identity theft occurs when one or more individuals commit criminal acts that result in stealing the identity of innocent people.
Several government sources work to educate the public about identity theft, and potentially take action against identity theft perpetrators.
One way to help protect yourself against identity theft is by investing in identity theft protection services. AAA is one of several companies that offer identity theft protection. There are also alternatives to AAA identity theft protection.
The AAA Identity Theft Protection program provides several levels of identity theft protection. ProtectMyID helps members navigate through the ways that people steal the identity of another individual, and helps protect their personal information against identity theft crimes.
John Galvin, President and CEO of AAA Northeast, revealed in May 2018 that AAA Premier Members receive $10,000 in identity theft insurance. This is in addition to the protections provided to all members that sign up for AAA identity theft protection.
AAA partnered with Experian, and provides three levels of identity theft protection.
ProtectMyID Essential is the basic identity theft protection, and is available to all AAA members. The free identity theft protection offers Experian credit monitoring, lost wallet protection, and fraud resolution support.
ProtectMyID Deluxe, the enhanced identity theft protection, offers the same services as the basic protection, and other protections. The monthly fee covers real-time identity alerts, dark web surveillance, up to $1 million identity insurance coverage, and credit monitoring from all three credit bureaus. This plan includes social security number monitoring, criminal records monitoring, address change monitoring, and bank account and credit card takeovers.
Choose the ProtectMyID Platinum plan, and receive the services provided in the deluxe level of identity theft protection, along with additional features. ProtectMyID Platinum customers receive social media monitoring, dormant credit card monitoring, positive credit activity alerts, credit limit and usage alerts, and payday loan monitoring.
There are some disadvantages to AAA identity theft protection, which potential customers should consider before choosing any of the three levels of AAA identity theft protection.
AAA’s identity theft protection is limited strictly to AAA members. If you are not a current AAA member, enrolling in any of the three ProtectMyID levels of identity theft protection requires that you first become an AAA member. This means that you pay the required AAA membership fees, and wait on confirmation of your membership before enrolling in the AAA identity theft protection.
The free basic identity theft protection offered to AAA members possibly sounds enticing for some members. The free level of identity theft protection offers very limited features, when compared to the other two levels, which require paying a monthly fee.
Not all members receive the $10,000 identity theft insurance provided with the ProtectMyID Essential option. This advantage is limited to AAA Premier Members. The AAA Premier membership is the highest-priced membership level.
AAA announced in 2018 that it partnered with Experian to provide identity theft protection. Some potential customers possibly prefer identity theft protection from a company not directly connected with one of the credit bureaus.
There are alternatives to AAA identity theft protection. The alternatives potentially appeal to individuals considering their identity theft protection options.
