“One especially memorable patient was resistant to the idea of a medical alert system at first. ‘Why do I need Big Brother watching me all the time?’ Over time, she admitted that she built up trust in the system: when it reliably connected, or she was able to speak with an emergency response agent in a timely fashion, or she got the help she was looking for.” Read more about Christopher Norman →

ADT Medical’s Packages and Pricing

There are three subscription plans for ADT’s medical alert systems, but we found that all of them have benefits and similarities that carry across each device. The goal of all three options is to provide an effective way to contact authorities, whether it’s during a medical emergency or any other situation in which a phone is out of reach. Here’s an overview of each ADT system’s pricing:

ADT Medical Alert Systems Medical Alert Basic Medical Alert Plus On-The-Go
System Type At-home/landline At-home/wireless Mobile
Connection Type Landline Cellular Cellular
Equipment Fees None None None
Activation Fee $99 $99 $99
Fall Detection Not supported #ERROR! #ERROR!
Extra Pendant $14.99 $14.99 Not Available
Waterproof Wall Mount Button #ERROR! #ERROR! #ERROR!
ADT Lockbox $29.99 $29.99 $29.99
Monthly Subscription Price $31.99 $39.99 $41.99
Quarterly Subscription Price $89.97 ($29.99 per month) $113.97 ($37.99 per month) $119.97 ($39.99 per month)
Annual Subscription Price $323.88 ($26.99 per month) $419.88 ($34.99 per month) $443.88 ($36.99 per month)

Each medical alert system includes a ForeveRate guarantee (meaning your subscription plan will never change in price), a premium warranty, two-day shipping, and 24/7 professional monitoring. There are also no base equipment fees for the included devices.

The only downside we’ve noticed so far is the $99 activation fee required for all systems. Medical Guardian and Bay Alarm no longer charge activation fees; for some reason, ADT still does, but it makes up for it by not charging equipment fees. Medical Guardian and Bay Alarm equipment fees can range up to around $200. Overall, ADT is more affordable.

ADT medical alert system customer support

ADT Medical provides a simple three-step process to get help during a medical emergency.

ADT Medical Alert Basic

The cheapest plan is the Medical Alert Basic plan. It’s a simple home landline system that comes with one wearable help button and a base unit. You can choose between a wristband or necklace for the help button. We opted for the necklace. The base unit also features temperature monitoring which can send alerts to a caregiver if you or your loved one’s house gets too hot or cold.

Medical Alert Basic’s biggest drawback is the limited 300-foot range. It covered most of our mid-sized three-bedroom house, but once we stepped outside, we lost connection. That’s not good if you enjoy outdoor activities like gardening. We’d recommend Medical Guardian’s MGHome Landline instead. It’s slightly pricier at $31.99 monthly but has a 1,400-foot range.

FYI: ADT’s at-home landline system also doesn’t support fall detection. In comparison, you can add fall detection to any Medical Guardian system.

ADT Medical Alert Plus

Second is the Medical Alert Plus plan, which does everything the Medical Alert Basic plan does, but connects to the monitoring center using cellular signals. In our experience, this is more reliable and not as prone to outages as landlines.

We also like the expanded 600-foot range, although still not as far-reaching as its top competitors like MGHome Cellular and SOS Home from Bay Alarm. It’s also pricier than those options. Medical Alert Plus costs $39.99, whereas the SOS Home Cellular costs $29.95.

Pro Tip: If you’re always on the go, consider a medical alert system that doubles as a smartwatch. Take a look at our review of the best medical alert systems worn as watches to find the best fit for you.

ADT Medical On-The-Go

Finally, there’s the On-The-Go plan. This standalone battery-powered unit can be taken anywhere making it perfect for people who are always on-the-go, as the name implies. The device also has a GPS tracker enabling ADT’s monitoring agents to send help to your location when needed. It also lets caretakers check in on where you are.

You can add fall detection for a fee. However, you cannot buy additional pendants for spousal monitoring with their on-the-go system.

Ordering ADT Medical Alert Systems

Now we’ll walk you through how we bought our ADT medical alert system. By following our process, you’ll be sure to get the best deal available as ADT offers coupons you need to apply to take advantage of their discounts.

Buying Experience

Before starting the buying process, we picked out the system we wanted to test. We like the freedom to leave the house as we please, so we opted for the On-The-Go system.

Next, we went to ADT’s main page for their medical alert systems. Where they list the prices for each system, they also provide a promo code that gives you a discount on their systems. The one we used was “SPRINGSALE” which provided us with a discount on fall detection, shipping, and quarterly monitoring.

With our discount code ready to go, we proceeded to order the system. After clicking on the system, you can choose any add-ons you want. We only opted for fall detection to take full advantage of our coupon code.

FYI: One thing to consider when paying for the system is whether or not you want to use an HSA.1 Generally, it’s a qualified expense, so that’s what we did when ordering our system. That let us pay for it with pre-tax dollars making it even more affordable.

ADT medical alert system accessories

Here’s a quick look at all three ADT medical alert systems.

Installation Process

Buying an ADT medical alert system is simple, and setting it up is easy too. Whether it’s a landline system or one of the wireless plans, they all follow about the same process.

To set up our On-The-Go system, all we had to do was charge it up and plug in the phone card, and then call up ADT to activate our device. For at-home systems, you need to plug them in instead of charge the battery, making the process even quicker. It shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes.

Pro Tip: After setting up your ADT Medical Alert system, test the help button to ensure it connects you to a monitoring agent. When we tested Medical Guardian, our at-home system had a connection issue which stopped our help button from working, so this is a key step you should not skip.

ADT Medical Alert System Features

No matter which plan you choose, you will have access to emergency services at the push of a button, whether it’s inside your home or while you’re on the go.

All plans also feature benefits such as a forever price guarantee, a lifetime warranty, and two-day shipping. We put together a comparison of the features each plan includes to make selecting the right plan even easier.

Features Medical Alert Basic Medical Alert Plus On-The-Go
In-home or mobile In-home operations In-home operations Mobile base unit
Landline required Yes No No
Fall detection No Optional Optional
ForeveRate guarantee Yes Yes Yes
Premium protection plan Yes Yes Yes
Home temperature monitoring Yes Yes No
24/7 professional monitoring Yes Yes Yes
Pendant options Yes Yes Yes
GPS tracking No No Yes

Amongst all these options, ADT Medical surprisingly does not offer a medical alert smartwatch. If that’s what you’re looking for, take a look at our Bay Alarm Medical review. They offer a smartwatch and all-in-one mobile watch system.

Once you pick a plan, select add-ons and spare paraphernalia can be added for an additional fee. That includes devices with automatic fall detection. While we consider fall detection a standard feature for medical alert systems, it’s an industry standard practice to charge more for it. Even all of our favorite fall detection medical alert systems charge extra.

Fall detection seems like a vital feature that should be included with every plan, especially since ADT is pricier than other services, such as Bay Alarm Medical.

Christopher Norman Headshot
“There’s an assumption with alert systems that a person will have the wherewithal to press a button or call for help if they fall… but what if they can’t? In these situations, a unit that will automatically trigger a call to a monitoring service, caregiver, or emergency personnel should be considered.”

Below is an overview of the add-on equipment available for ADT medical alert systems.

Add-on equipment Cost Features and functionality
Fall detection $11 per month billed for the entirety of your monitoring contract upfront. A separate pendant that automatically detects when a user falls without the push of a button. Helpful if the user is unconscious or unable to reach their button.
Extra wristbands or pendants $14.99 each Spare buttons for if the main button is lost or damaged. Also works for a spouse.
Waterproof wall mount buttons $2.99 per month billed for the entirety of your monitoring contract upfront. Extra wall-mounted buttons typically used for high-risk areas of the home like the bathroom.
ADT lockbox $29.99 each Lockbox for spare keys in the event first responders or caretakers need to enter a home.
Leather case $10 each Secure case to place your On-The-Go device in when not in use.

Do ADT Medical Alert Systems Have an App?

When testing our ADT Medical Alert System, we were surprised to learn it didn’t have any mobile apps.

ADT advertises several apps, but as far as we can tell, there isn’t a way to connect mobile devices to any of the medical alert systems. That’s a feature many of ADT’s competitors have, and it’s something we want ADT to add in the future.

Current ADT Medical Alert System Deals

Right now, ADT is running a spring sale that we expect to turn into a summer sale shortly. The actual discount they offer rarely changes, but the coupon code does, so you’ll need to check back frequently.

ADT’s current deal gives you 50 percent off on their fall detection for any of their systems. If you sign up for quarterly monitoring, you also get $2 off your monthly fee and free shipping. You can use the coupon code “SPRINGSALE” to take advantage of this deal.

Which ADT Medical Alert System Is Best for You?

Each of the three ADT medical alert systems are designed for specific use-cases. So, picking the system that’s right for you shouldn’t be too difficult. Let’s break it down:

  • Choose the Medical Alert Basic system if you’re on a tight budget or live in a rural area with minimal cellular coverage. It does not support fall detection, so we only recommend it in those two circumstances.
  • Choose the Medical Alert Plus system if you want a high-quality at-home system and your home has AT&T service. We recommend this system over the Basic system as long as you can afford it and have cellular coverage.
  • Choose the On-The-Go system if you ever leave your house on your own. It has a portable base unit that has a 40 hour battery life so you can take it with you and stay protected in case you have a medical emergency while out on your own.

To make sure you live in an area with adequate cellular service for a Medical Alert Plus or On-The-Go system, we recommend using the FCC’s broadband coverage map.2 That’s the best way to get accurate data that is not inflated by the mobile network provider.

ADT Medical Vs. The Competition

Compared to Bay Alarm Medical and Medical Guardian’s pricing, ADT Medical offers a lower cost service overall. They only charge an activation fee for equipment, which is less than the equipment fees from Bay Alarm Medical and Medical Guardian for most systems, and their monthly monitoring costs are lower too.

That said, we find Bay Alarm Medical and Medical Guardian offer better monitoring and equipment. Bay Alarm Medical packages stand out for their fast response times whereas Medical Guardian offers more advanced features and options, including a medical alert smartwatch, called the MGMove.

Methodology: How We Assessed the Value of ADT Medical

Finding the price of ADT’s medical alert systems is easy, but assessing the value gets more complicated. We started with thoroughly researching each system to understand the full cost of ADT considering everything from their free lifetime warranty to their ForeveRate guarantee.

Then, we ordered an ADT Medical Alert System so that our team of senior care experts could test it out in their day-to-day lives. They also ran several tests, such as simulated medical emergencies and falls, to better understand how the system operates during an emergency. Only then could we determine the value ADT offers.

Bottom Line

There are positive aspects of ADT’s medical alert systems. Buying and setting them up is quick and easy, and the add-ons can make them easier to use. There are, however, some drawbacks to ADT’s medical alert systems — namely the price. ADT’s medical alert systems cost more than most competitors and you need to manually input a coupon code to get the best deal.

The lack of bundle options with at-home and on-the-go devices feels like an oversight, not to mention the lack of a dedicated app. Still, we think the ease of use and simple installation outweigh those drawbacks.

After all, we buy medical alert systems for one purpose: keeping our loved ones safe. ADT makes it easy for our loved ones to use their emergency button in an emergency.

We appreciate ADT Medical’s ForeveRate guarantee as it allows us to plan our budget for our entire retirement.
