After collating 15 years’ worth of data, our security researchers analyzed Minnesota property crime rates, examining burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft statistics for key insights. Here’s what we found.
Burglary in Minnesota
Minnesota burglaries have steadily declined as much as 46% since we began reporting. Total incidents fell from 29,716 to 15,927, with activity peaking at 30,306 break-ins in 2006. Current levels account for about 14% of property crime, with the most recent downward trend demonstrating the state’s crime prevention strategies are working.
Larceny in Minnesota
As Minnesota’s most common property crime, accounting for 77 percent of incidents, larceny has still declined over the 15-year period by 21 percent. Our experts documented numbers falling from 114,304 to 90,092, with a peak of 115,892 thefts in 2007. A reduction in incidents looked promising in 2018, but increased again the following year.
Car Theft in Minnesota
Car theft in Minnesota has seen a 21% decrease across the observation period, but incidents are starting to rise again annually. To date, motor vehicle theft represents approximately 10% of all property crime statewide. We’ll continue to monitor to see if Minnesota can once again alter the crime’s trajectory.
