Property crime in West Virginia declined significantly during the 15-year observation period. We gathered and analyzed data on burglary, larceny, and auto theft, and as you’ll see below, West Virginia made huge progress.
Burglary in West Virginia
West Virginia achieved a 48% reduction in burglaries. Starting at 11,334 incidents and peaking at 12,005, the numbers eventually declined to 5,891. That said, our team noted that burglary comprises roughly 21% of the Mountain State’s property crime total, which is a little higher compared to neighboring states.
Larceny in West Virginia
Theft also declined significantly. While it accounts for roughly 71% of property crimes in West Virginia, it’s now down to 20,066 incidents from the 32,603 cases at the start of the data collection period. That represents a decline of about 38%. With these numbers, the Mountain State shows meaningful progress despite economic challenges in several regions.
Car Theft in West Virginia
During our observation period, car theft in West Virginia peaked at 4,057, which is more than 200 cases higher than the 3,820 incidents in the first year. Still, year 15’s numbers show that car theft in the state has dropped to 2,419 cases, which shows that this particular type of property crime dropped by about 37% in a span of 15 years.
