Our researchers have analyzed over 15 years’ worth of Oklahoma property crime rates, breaking down burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft data statewide. Here are our key insights.
Burglary in Oklahoma
Our data reveals a 26% decline in Oklahoma burglaries over the past 15 years, from 35,692 to 26,577 incidents. The crime peaked at 38,071 break-ins in 2009 before trending downward. These offenses represent about 24% of property crime, which is among the higher proportions in the region. It suggests to us that there is an ongoing need for enhanced home security measures.
Larceny in Oklahoma
While representing approximately 65% of Oklahoma’s property crime, larceny offenses have declined by 23% since we started recording them. Our analysis reveals theft falling from 93,814 to 72,632 incidents. While more work still needs to be done, the Sooner State’s progress reflects coordinated retail security enhancements in major cities.
Car Theft in Oklahoma
Motor vehicle theft in Oklahoma decreased just 4% over the period studied, from 13,900 to 13,378 incidents. Numbers have been up and down over the period, with the state having a good run between 2008 and 2015. Offenses started rising again in 2016. The minimal change reflects persistent challenges, which will hopefully be addressed.
