At its highest point, North Carolina recorded 111,556 burglaries before numbers began falling consistently year-over-year. Our latest report reveals 54,447 incidents, which is a 48% decrease from the initial 104,298 count in 2005. Today, break-ins represent roughly 22% of the Tar Heel State’s property offenses.
Larceny in North Carolina
North Carolina theft numbers have steadily declined over the past 15 years. Since 2005, the state has experienced a drop of 21%, from 221,091 to 174,728 incidents. Peak numbers reached 234,480 before trending downward in 2009, though incidents began to increase again in 2011. Since then, offenses have fallen annually.
Car Theft in North Carolina
Car theft in North Carolina shows positive progress with a 37% decrease across our observation period. Motor vehicle thefts declined from 28,466 to 18,061, peaking at 30,102 before falling. Since 2015, incidents have started rising again, but never to the same levels as 2005 and 2006.
