We review property crime trends for the Land of Enchantment to design effective home protection strategies for citizens.
Our team has gone through 15 years’ worth of New Mexico property crime rates, specifically burglary, larceny, and vehicle theft statistics. During the analysis, we noted several trends. This is what we learned.
Burglary in New Mexico peaked at 21,955 incidents in 2009 before declining 30% over the observation period. Our last reporting period showed 14,610 offenses, representing approximately 22% of all property offenses statewide. The year-over-year trend shows us that meaningful improvements in home security are contributing to the decline in the state.
Theft incidents had picked up in recent years, but overall have declined 18% across New Mexico. Our analysis found larceny accounts for roughly 64% of property offenses. Peak activity reached 52,907 thefts in 2016, with gradual improvement occurring over the past two years.
Car theft in New Mexico continues to be a challenge for the Land of Enchantment, with motor vehicle thefts increasing 13% since 2015. Incidents peaked at 11,772 in 2017, after five years of results ranging from 5,250 to 6,290. Fortunately, our most recent reports show a decline year on year.
