We’ve looked over more than a decade’s worth of Montana property crime rates, focusing on burglary, larceny, and vehicle theft statistics. These are some of the trends that stood out.

Burglary in Montana

Since 2005, our team has noted a 21% decline in Montana burglaries. Starting at 3,642 incidents and peaking at 4,064, numbers fell to 2,887 in our most recent year on record. Overall, break-ins account for about 12% of property offenses, which is lower than in other Western states.

Larceny in Montana

Larceny incidents represent approximately 78% of Montana’s property offenses and have decreased 24% since 2005. Our latest analysis reveals 18,176 records, down from their peak of 23,794. This demonstrates that the Treasure State continues to show consistent improvement in both urban centers and rural communities.

Car Theft in Montana

Car theft in Montana continues to present a challenge. Motor vehicle thefts increased 21% over 15 years, from 1,971 to 2,377. Incidents peaked at 2,796, representing approximately 10% of all property crime. The state’s best result was in 2011, with numbers beginning to increase annually after that.
