Our team collected 15 years’ worth of property crime rates for Mississippi, including burglary, larceny, and vehicle theft statistics. We’ve highlighted the trends that stood out to us below.
Burglary in Mississippi
We learned that home break-ins make up approximately 26% of Mississippi’s property crime, the highest proportion among neighboring states. Our data also shows that incidents peaked at 30,722 in 2011 before declining 31% to 18,660 in our most recent findings. The reduction from an initial 26,866 burglaries reflects improving security measures throughout the Magnolia State.
Larceny in Mississippi
In the 15 years we’ve been tracking larceny, theft incidents dropped 24% across Mississippi, from 60,873 to 46,300. This crime is still a significant issue, as it accounts for approximately 65% of property crime. This is lower than most Southern states, though. Numbers have steadily declined since we first reported 60,873 incidents in 2005.
Car Theft in Mississippi
While car theft in Mississippi has declined 23% across the observation period, it is starting to see an uptick. We initially reported 7,492 in 2005, with the latest results showing 5,747. Motor vehicle thefts peaked at 8,330 in 2006 before falling to a low of 4,300 in 2018. Based on our current results, car theft represents approximately 7% of all property crime.
