Our team of experts analyzed Indiana property crime rates, focusing on burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft data, and discovered some interesting insights. Here’s everything we learned.
Burglary in Indiana
We were impressed to see that burglaries were cut in half across Indiana. Incidents peaked at 50,571 in 2011 before declining to 21,795 in 2019, a 50% reduction from the start of our observation. Indiana home break-ins make up approximately 20% of property crime, showing that significant security improvements have occurred statewide.
Larceny in Indiana
Another impressive datapoint we noticed is that Indiana experienced a 36% reduction in theft. Our data shows incidents declining from 151,278 to 97,176, with theft accounting for approximately 73% of property crime. The peak of 150,655 occurred at the study’s outset before trending steadily downward.
Car Theft in Indiana
Car theft in Indiana also shows a positive trajectory with a 37% decrease across our observation period. Motor vehicle thefts dropped from 21,744 to 13,723 and account for approximately 10% of all property crime. The latest results are on par with the lowest recorded total of 13,837 in 2009.
