Illinois has seen a significant turnaround in home break-ins in recent years. Starting at 77,635 incidents in 2005, burglaries have fallen to 34,433. That’s a 56% decline. The peak reached 78,968 burglaries in 2008, with current levels accounting for about 21% of the Prairie State’s property offenses.
Larceny in Illinois
While it’s still the leading offense, accounting for 77% of property crime, larceny in Illinois has declined by 35% over the years we’ve studied. Incidents fell from 277,662 to 180,776, with numbers steadily declining year-over-year. Our experts attribute the improvement to coordinated retail security enhancements across major metropolitan areas.
Car Theft in Illinois
Car theft in Illinois has also shown impressive improvement over the years, with motor vehicle thefts declining 52% across our observation period. Incidents dropped from a peak of 39,373 to 18,775, which is one of the best results to date. The crime currently accounts for approximately 8% of all property crime statewide.
