If you’re looking for high-quality security equipment that comes in customizable packages that you can easily set up yourself, Frontpoint should be on your short list. It’s definitely on ours. In fact, we like it so much that we put it on several of our best lists, including our list of the best DIY security systems out there. Keep reading, and we think you’ll see why.

There are many things we love about Frontpoint. Its overall customer service is a big one. It’s 30-day money-back guarantee was another. And since installation was all DIY, we saved at least $100 by choosing Frontpoint rather than a brand that requires professional installation.

Now, we’re not saying that Frontpoint is definitely the best security system for you. It’s certainly not perfect either. One of its biggest drawbacks is the price. We didn’t mind the equipment pricing so much. On that score, Frontpoint is actually pretty flexible. The company can be quite rigid when it comes to monitoring fees, though. First of all, professional monitoring is required. You have to sign a contract and everything. Added to that, there’s only one monitoring option, and it costs $49.99 per month.

There are pros and cons to consider, so let’s start off by taking a look at what Frontpoint offers in terms of features:

Key Features

  • 100% Wireless
  • LTE Cellular Connection With Wi-Fi Backup
  • DIY Installation
  • Intrusion Protection
  • Custom Scenes
  • Indoor and Outdoor Cameras
  • Environmental Protection
  • Remote Controls

What Sets Frontpoint Apart

Two big features make Frontpoint stand out from the crowd.

  • The first of these is their dual connectivity. In simple terms, the system’s central hub can connect through either a Wi-Fi or a cellular signal. Why is this so important? It ensures that your system can always communicate with both your mobile device and the Frontpoint monitoring center, even if one or the other of these signals should go out.
  • The second feature worth noting is the system’s geofencing capability. It lets you create a virtual barrier around your home. Any time you step out of that barrier, Frontpoint can arm itself automatically. The same goes for when you come back home – it disarms to let you in without triggering an alarm.

As if these two major features weren’t enough, Frontpoint offers even more. The system is also known for its quick-and-easy self-installation. You get step-by-step instructions, and help is just a phone call away. This means you can be up and running in under 30 minutes. Plus, Frontpoint offers a three-year hardware warranty. That means you can try the system out with virtually no risk.

“Burglars look for homes unmonitored by security systems. Not only is Frontpoint’s system highly visible, it has one of the fastest response times at 25 seconds on average. I also like their HD doorbell camera for capturing details of package thieves. From my perspective, Frontpoint security has the essentials to keep your home secure.”

Using the Frontpoint app, you can arm your system remotely, receive alerts, tweak settings, and livestream from your indoor or outdoor cameras. Away from home when you get an alert? Check the app to see if it is the Fed Ex deliveryman or a prowler on your front porch.

The app also gives you access to Frontpoint’s home automation tools, so you can control things like smart door locks, smart lights, and smart plugs with your mobile device. Kids forget to turn off the basement lights before you left for the weekend? No worries. The app not only lets you know they’re still on, but gives the power to turn them off.

You get all of these controls automatically with the Ultimate monitoring plan. (This is the only monitoring plan the system is offering moving forward, and it costs $49.99 per month.)

Overview of Frontpoint Pricing

Frontpoint’s retail pricing is pretty average when you compare it to the rest of the market. Systems start at around $500 and can go as high as $1,300. That’s just a touch under what you’d pay for ADT or Vivint systems. That said, Frontpoint is almost always running a sale of one kind or another, and its sale prices are actually at the lower end of the market, between $100 and $350. That makes Frontpoint one of the more affordable home security systems out there.

With that in mind, does the lower price translate to lower quality on Frontpoint’s products and services? Definitely not. As a matter of fact, Frontpoint offers more advanced features than many of its competitors, including SimpliSafe. One of those impressive features is geofencing, which uses your phone location data to control the system’s arming modes and home automation. Frontpoint is one of only a handful of security systems that offers that feature.

If you’re on the fence, keep this in mind: There’s no contract if you pay the equipment fee up-front, so you can cancel your monitoring at any time with no penalty. (Just give them 30 days’ notice.) Plus, Frontpoint has a 30-day, money-back guarantee on equipment, so you’ll have a window of opportunity to back out if you change your mind.

That said, you will have to sign a contract if you buy equipment through financing. Financing makes buying a Frontpoint system less of a burden, since you can get started by paying just the first month of monitoring, but the equipment cost is spread over three years. That means you’ll pay more than the $49.99 monthly monitoring fee, and of course, you’ll have to sign a contract, but as you’ll see later on, it might just make sense to go with the financing option.

Pro Tip: If none of the Frontpoint equipment packages is the right fit, you can create your own. Just use the “build-your-own” tool on their site. It’ll add their hub and keypad ($99) to your cart. Then you can add on sensors, cameras, and whatever else you want. They’ll automatically throw in a yard sign and door/window decals for free, and for a limited, a free doorbell camera that usually costs about $190.

From Rob Gabriele, Managing Editor & Home Security Expert
Rob Gabriele
“Interior cameras are another important component I look for in a security system, and Frointpoint’s cameras check the box. I encourage you to place Frontpoint’s indoor cameras with motion detection throughout the house to protect valuables such as electronics, cash, and jewelry. These are the most common items burglars seek.”

Frontpoint Monthly Monitoring Fees

Most security systems will offer you two or more monitoring plans with a tiered-structure, starting from basic intrusion monitoring and adding features like cloud video storage and home automation as you climb up the price ladder.

Frontpoint does things a little differently. While it’s required that you purchase a monitoring plan to use Frontpoint, there’s only one subscription option that covers all the features you can possibly get from a Frontpoint system. The monthly monitoring fee starts at $25.99.

Frankly, $24.99 is just five dollars more than SimpliSafe charges for its most basic monitoring package, but keep in mind that’s a starting price. If you’re looking to include all of Frontpoint’s feature options, like video security and home automation, the price rises to around $50 per month.

Of course, that only matters if you want those premium features. If you do, here’s why getting an equipment financing plan makes sense: To get the most out of your monthly monitoring fees, you’ll want to get equipment that will let you use advanced features like home automation and video recording. You’ll need security cameras and smart home devices for those, some of them costing up to $200. That’s a huge dent to the wallet if you’re paying upfront, but if you get a financing plan, you’ll be able to add more equipment without investing a substantial amount.

All Frontpoint equipment — whether it’s part of a package or added on separately — comes with a three-year limited warranty. This is actually one of the better warranties in the industry. Ring Alarm, for example, offers a one-year warranty, and home security powerhouse Vivint offers a four-month warranty.

How to Order

Since Frontpoint doesn’t make you mess with long-term contracts and they’ve narrowed their monitoring options to just one all-inclusive plan, ordering a system is easier than it’s ever been. Just go to their website, select the equipment package you want — or build your own — and check out. Easy as that.

You’ll be enrolled in the Ultimate monitoring package during the checkout process. There are no contracts to sign, and no installation appointments to schedule. Once you complete your purchase, Frontpoint will ship you your equipment, with detailed instructions for DIY installation. You should have everything set up in 30 minutes or less. It’s that easy!

Overall Value of Frontpoint

Because of Frontpoint’s robust app, strong home automation capabilities, and innovative features like geofencing and customizable “scenes,” we rank them high in several categories. Not only are they among our top DIY home security systems, but they also rank high among our best home automation security systems and best overall home security systems.

That said, if you’re just looking for a straightforward DIY system that’s reliable and has nice smartphone controls, you could probably save some money on monthly fees and get everything you’re looking for with one of SimpliSafe’s packages. (Read our SimpliSafe review for the lay of the land.) And if you’re looking to forgo professional monitoring and do it yourself, then you should consider these top no-monthly-fee home security systems.
