Editor's Note: Aura has some new and improved features that aim to keep customers safe online, including anti-tracking software, email masking, enhanced browser safety tools, and ad-blocking programs. All of these features are now available to subscribers through Aura’s downloadable browser extension.

We live in a virtual world, and the threats to our security have increasingly become…well, virtual. That doesn’t mean you should take down your home security cameras or disable your home security system. Physical threats remain.

If you’re not taking steps to protect your identity, though, you might as well be leaving your front door unlocked. With your personal information, an identity thief can make use of your credit cards, take out loans in your name, or even commit crimes under your identity.

Aura puts a stop to all that. How? It looks for any suspicious activity related to your identity and notifies you about it immediately. That way, you have a chance to stop the identity theft from occurring before the criminal can do serious damage. And even if they steal your identity successfully, Aura offers $1 million insurance to help you get your identity back on track.

FYI: Aura recently added a VPN to their suite of services and Circle Parental Controls to their family plans.

We cover all of Aura’s many features in our complete Aura review. Here, we explore the Aura’s plans and prices. When you get to the bottom line, sometimes a service that has all the top features and benefits doesn’t look quite as good. We can’t all afford caviar, and no one wants to pay top dollar for low-quality caviar. While it’s a bit of a spoiler, we can tell you upfront that Aura actually looks even better when you realize just how much you’re getting for your money.

Aura’s Pricing At a Glance

Aura takes all the guesswork out of identity theft protection pricing. You don’t have to choose between a lot of plans that offer different levels of coverage depending on what you’re willing to pay. Aura offers three different subscriptions, but they all provide exactly the same features. The only difference between them is in how many people they cover. As long as you can count how many family members you have, you should be in good shape.

There is a separate Kids plan, but it’s not a true identity theft protection plan. We actually think of it more as an add-on, since what it really provides is a suite of parental controls and child safety tools.

Let’s start, then, with a quick overview of Aura’s three plans.

Aura’s Three Plans

Obviously, price and value are the most important aspects of any identity theft protection plan. It’s a nice bonus, though Aura’s plans are also so easy to understand. They basically include all the same benefits, except for the Family Plan, which comes with additional safety features for children. For the most part, though, you only need to know how many household members need protection in order to choose a plan.

Aura Plan Individual Plan Couples Plan Family Plan
Individuals Covered 1 Adult 2 Adults 5 Adults, Unlimited Children
Devices Covered 10 20 (10 per adult) 50 (10 per adult)
Monthly Cost $12.99 $19.99 $47.99
Annual Cost $119.88 ($9.99 per month) $215.88 ($17.99 per month) $299.98($24.99)

Aura offers discounts if you’re willing to sign up for a full year of service, and given that identity protection should be an ongoing effort, we recommend going this route for the savings.

Also note that there’s a Kids plan, in case you want to sign up for the Individual or Couple plan but have kids to worry about. The Kids plan offers parental controls via the Circle app as well as digital protections such as cyberbullying and in-app online predator monitoring. These features will keep your children safe online, not just their identities.

Take note, however, that the Family plan also includes those features. Plus, if you go with it, Aura will also monitor your child’s identity, particularly their Social Security Number. You can add as many children as you have to the Family plan.

FYI: Child identity theft protection is a necessity nowadays. Child identities have clean credit backgrounds, making them a tempting target for identity thieves.

As you would expect, the price you pay varies depending on how many people you’re covering. In addition, though, you can save some money by purchasing a full year of service up-front. Of course, we’re not all comfortable making that commitment, and it’s not always easy to come up with a large chunk of change to put down initially. So Aura does allow you to pay one month at a time. It’s just a bit more expensive.

Aura Plans and Pricing

Most identity theft protection services give you two weeks to decide if you like them. A few give you a whole month. Aura goes further. First, the company offers a 14-day free trial. That’s not a money-back guarantee. You pay nothing down, and if you decide to continue service, you only pay after that free trial period is over.

Of course, if you pay by the month, you always have the option to cancel your subscription at any time. Even if you sign up for an annual plan, though, you get a 60-day money-back guarantee. Plus, whatever plan you choose, you always have access to Aura’s 24/7 customer support. That makes it easy to cancel when you’re ready.

You should know that all of the prices listed above are first-year prices. Aura charges up to 40 percent more if you decide to renew your plan for a second year. This is typical of the industry, actually. It’s also true that most companies will reduce this price increase if you’re willing to do a little negotiating.

Again, the only real difference between these plans (besides the number of individuals they protect) is those extra features designed to protect children in the Family plan. Don’t worry, if you don’t have kids, Aura isn’t going to charge you for unnecessary tools to protect them.

Let’s take a closer look at each plan separately to see how they work.

FYI: All of these prices reflect first-year, introductory rates. Renewal rates are sometimes more than double these initial rates. The month-to-month rate for the Couples Plan, for instance, starts at $29 a month but renews after a year at $48 a month. However, this is standard practice in the identity theft protection industry.

Aura’s Individual Plan

In addition to outstanding identity theft protection, Aura plans also include one of the most comprehensive credit monitoring services in the industry. Among its many services, this coverage includes

  • Personal Information Monitoring
  • Account Monitoring
  • Social Security Number Monitoring
  • Bank Account Detail Monitoring
  • Investment Account Monitoring
  • Home Title Monitoring
  • $1 Million in Identity Theft Insurance

As if identity theft protection and full-service credit monitoring weren’t enough, Aura also provides customers with digital protections. Every Aura plan, including the Individual plan, features

  • A VPN (Virtual Private Network)
  • Anti-malware software
  • A password manager
  • An ad and malicious site blocker
  • An email alias generator

The Email Alias generator is a relatively new tool from Aura that helps shield customers from data breaches. It creates a fake email address when you sign up for a new account so if the company suffers a data breach, your real email won’t be leaked. This also cuts down on the spam you receive. Some competitors charge as much as $20 per month for a similar service.

Aura’s Couple Plan

As the name implies, the Couples Plan includes everything the Individual Plan includes, but for two people. Both of you get full identity theft protection and credit monitoring, protection for up to 10 devices, and each person gets their own $1,000,000 insurance policy.

Here’s what’s really cool about the Couples Plan: you don’t actually have to be a romantic couple to use it. Siblings, friends, even roommates can sign up together. Accounts are essentially individual and managed separately. You simply share a subscription with another person, but by sharing, you save some extra cash. The Couples Plan costs just $20 a month at the monthly subscription rate. That’s $6 per month less than purchasing two Individual Plans. Sign up for an annual plan, and you can save even more.

Aura’s Family Plan

Aura’s Family Plan is geared towards…wait for it…families. It’s best for anyone with children, and like all of Aura’s plans, it’s one of the most comprehensive on the market. For starters, it covers an unlimited number of children, surprisingly rare in the identity protection industry.

In addition, the Family Plan provides extra features specific for kids, like access to parental controls. This allows parents to block and filter websites and apps, set screen time limits, and track internet usage. It also offers cyberbullying and predator alerts, and 24/7 in-game voice and text monitoring.

That said, the Family Plan still places limits on access to Aura’s VPN and antivirus software. Insurance coverage is similarly limited. Child identity monitoring is also less thorough than adult monitoring. It only monitors their Social Security Numbers.

Pro Tip: Got kids? Worried about protecting their identities? Then you’re going to want to read our guide to keeping your children safe online.

On the plus side, the Family Plan covers up to five adults allowing you to include family members, no matter what their living situation might be. Need to cover adult children? No problem. Have a parent who lives with you? You can cover them, no questions asked. Every adult member of your household – up to five – gets full identity theft protection, including credit monitoring. They all get device protection on up to ten devices and up to $1,000,000 in identity theft insurance. Even if you don’t have kids, the Family Plan can be an amazing deal.

The Family subscription is especially affordable, considering everything it offers. Plus, you can save a bundle if you’re willing to pay annually. The Family plan is priced at just under $50 per month – not bad considering all the benefits it includes. But if you’re willing to pay for a year up front, you can slice that price in half.

Beyond Identity Theft

Finally, we should point out that Aura offers three additional online security services at no additional cost. When you sign up for any Aura plan you get an antivirus, a password manager, and a VPN. All three are designed to proactively protect your identity, and if you ordered them separately from other companies, they might cost as much as $60 a month.

What do these services actually do? Antivirus protects your devices from malware that might compromise your data. The VPN secures your internet traffic, ensuring nobody can track your online activities. The password manager secures your login credentials and also helps you generate strong passwords. All three prevent your identity from being stolen in the first place, helping minimize Aura’s need to monitor the online world for your data.

Final Thoughts on Aura

We believe Aura’s subscriptions provide excellent value. They come with essential and advanced credit monitoring and identity protection features, and also add extra security tools, like an antivirus, a VPN, and a password manager.

Plus, the provider has plans for everyone: single adults, adults living together, and families (and even includes family-centric features, like parental controls and child safety tools). And you get all of this for a great price — not to mention that Aura also has a free 14-day trial and a 60-day refund for its long-term plans.
