Kuna is not your everyday security camera. This brand, which also includes sister product Maximus,1 offers solutions that combine lighting and video surveillance in more discreet ways than industry top performers like Ring and Arlo.

Kuna takes a “hidden camera” approach with their Smart Security Lights, so you’ll get a camera that simply looks like an attractive light fixture – and no one will be the wiser.

Kuna Maximus

Kuna Maximus

Inside Kuna’s inventory, you’ll find just three device categories: smart security lighting, the Maximus Answer video doorbell, and the Maximus Floodlight.

We made a lot of surprising discoveries in our first go-round with Kuna cameras, where we got the full day-to-day experience. Today, however, we’re taking a deeper look at the pricing structure for Kuna’s equipment, storage, and monitoring.

While equipment isn’t too terribly expensive with Kuna, there are some added costs our team discovered on the storage side that are worth exploring.

Let’s go through the full picture of how much you should expect to pay, what makes the brand stand out, and everything you need to know before buying a Kuna product.

What Makes Kuna Stand Out

Kuna does things differently in this industry, and it’s a good thing. While equipment isn’t too terribly expensive with Kuna, there are some added costs our team discovered on the storage side that I’ll get into shortly.

Kuna is versatile and modern, with devices that push the envelope in their industry. Discreet security is a running theme, hence the light fixtures that look nothing like cameras.

Features aren’t as robust as Arlo’s suite of cameras, for instance, but for a few solid devices that work just the way they should, Kuna has lots to offer.
Through Kuna, you can opt for subscription-based monitoring or do it yourself with the basic motion detection and other features Kuna offers. Kuna’s artificial intelligence adds person/vehicle detection to the camera experience, which more cameras are capable of nowadays (and we like it!). It’s not the same level of precision you’d get in a Nest Camera system, which has software that recognizes people’s faces,2 but their person detection was just as useful in many outdoor scenarios.

Before getting too deeply into the features Kuna/Maximus offers, here’s a quick rundown of some things we liked – and a few things we didn’t – about the California-based brand.

Kuna Prices and Packages

Kuna Smart Security Light

Kuna Smart Security Light

Kuna’s smart security lighting comes in several colors and types, like classic, coach, or contemporary, so you can choose the design that works best for your home decor. They’re designed like many wall sconce fixtures, and they’re just as easy to install as any other lighting device – in other words, the camera doesn’t add too much extra to the installation timeline.

And most models start at $150, which is a fair price for all-in-one camera and lighting devices like this.

Pro Tip: For another unique camera/lighting setup, Zmodo’s Torch 360 is a low-cost combo attachment that fits into most light fixtures and comes with pan and tilt features you can control from your phone. Learn more about Zmodo’s broad camera lineup here.

Kuna Maximus Answer™ Doorbell

Kuna Maximus Answer™ Doorbell

Rounding out Kuna’s suite of products is a nice-looking doorbell camera, also under the Maximus label, called the Answer DualCam Video Doorbell. This one happens to be equipped with not one, but two cameras, adding a wider viewing angle and HDR video quality so you’ll see who’s at your door, whether the sun is glaring, or the rain is pouring.

The dual camera brings something new and different to the table, and some stiff competition to the industry’s best doorbell cameras. And for $150, the price seems fair, too – though it is $30 more than the wired Arlo Video Doorbell, in case you’re curious.

Kuna Maximus Camera Floodlight

And for long-range outdoor security, Kuna also offers the 2400-lumen Maximus Camera Floodlight. For around $150 (prices vary according to the retailer), it’s a nice-looking device that works best as a replacement for an old floodlight. It takes minutes to install, too, and it’s very similar to Ring’s Floodlight Cam.

Kuna Lighting and Camera Costs

Kuna Product Brand Product Type Cost
Answer DualCam Video Doorbell Maximus Doorbell Camera $180
Smart Security Light Maximus Security Camera $150+
Camera Floodlight Maximus Security Camera $150+

Kuna Storage and Monitoring

You can use Kuna’s smart security products and lighting without paying anything per month or signing up for a subscription, which is a perk we always like to see in a security camera. Rather than being locked down, you can choose a plan and pay for just the coverage you need. That said, it’s not a bad idea to sign up for a Kuna Premium3 subscription to get the full benefits of a Kuna/Maximus camera.

We broke down Kuna’s subscription options below:

Essential Security Peace of Mind Absolute Control
No. of Cameras 1 4 8
Lookback 7 Days 14 Days 30 Days
Unlimited Downloads Yes Yes Yes
Kuna AI Person Detection No Yes Yes
Product Discount 5% 10% 15%
Price $4.99 per month 9.99 per month $19.99 per month

One more thing on Kuna storage, though – it’s a bit steep for what you get. For $5 per month, you can cover one Kuna camera and get basically the same features offered in the majority of home security camera subscription packages nowadays. Those are all nice things to have, but it’s worth noting that you can get basically the same level of protection in a Blink camera package for $3.50 per month.

Did You Know? Blink cameras are super easy to use and pretty affordable equipment-wise. Curious? We cover the full Blink camera experience here.

Current Deals on Kuna

Since their products are not as widely available as other brands, it might take some digging to find the best deals on a Kuna or Maximus camera; we do know that many retailers discount Kuna cameras at certain times of the year. It’s best to keep checking throughout the year for new deals, discounts, and other offers on Kuna products.

Kuna: A Look at Features and Tech

This brand’s gone through some changes in recent years. But the strong points hold up: Smart security lighting that looks elegant and subtle, while also providing peace of mind.

As for their cameras, they handle well, too: Clear video, motion-activated lighting (if you choose), and a couple of neat AI customization options to make full use of your footage.

While none of this is too groundbreaking, it’s always nice to have more control over your cameras, and these days, that tends to start with a little AI. With Kuna’s AI subscription service, you can also start with a 14-day free trial if you’re not sure. So that’s a nice touch.

A Breakdown of Kuna’s Best Features

Mobile Alerts
MOBILE ALERTS

Kuna is an app-based security platform that will send alerts to your phone or tablet when activity is detected. Within the Kuna app, you can customize and control your footage.

24/7 Monitoring
VIDEO STORAGE AND MONITORING

Kuna offers three monitoring plans with varying degrees of per-item coverage. But you can also store up to two hours of video for free with Kuna, and download up to three clips. That’s not much, but for self-monitoring, some folks don’t need much more than that.

Power Outage Protection
HARDWIRED DEVICES

The equipment for Kuna does require some wiring, since many of them are combined with household lighting fixtures. The doorbell, too, needs to be hardwired to work with your existing door chime. But the installation process, for the most part, is an easy one for all three of Kuna’s devices.

DIY Installation
DIY INSTALLATION

The Kuna Home Security system is a DIY installation. You shouldn’t have much of a problem installing a Kuna device yourself, but if you need help, most electricians can handle this job in a snap.

Voice Response
VOICE RESPONSE

The Kuna system offers automated greetings and two-way talk so you can interact with visitors remotely, with or without a subscription.

Kuna Cameras: Final Thoughts

There’s a lot to like here in Kuna’s small but impressive home security suite. The equipment is solid, built for the outdoors, and it doesn’t look too shabby, either.

We recommend devices like this to folks who prefer a subtle home security experience. The floodlight camera, for one, offers long-range lighting, which is one of those priceless features you really can’t take for granted in any home layout.

While Kuna’s costs certainly aren’t the lowest out there, you can count on the cameras protecting your home from intruders, which is really the whole point here, right?

If you’re searching for a fully connected system that plays well with a smart home, you won’t find that in Kuna. But for functional lighting and security all-in-one, Kuna is an enlightened choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are Kuna and Maximus the same company?

Essentially, yes. The equipment is pretty much the same, whether they’re branded Kuna or Maximus.

  • How long does it take to install Kuna cameras?

In our review, it took an average of 10-20 minutes to get Kuna cameras up and running. They’re configured for DIY setup and installation.

  • Are Kuna cameras expensive?

On the whole, no. They handle their cameras a bit differently, so it’s hard to compare. But Kuna is not an overpriced brand, in my experience. The quality of the light fixtures, for the most part, is as nice as anything you can buy at Lowe’s or Home Depot.

  • Does Kuna work with Alexa?

On a limited basis, yes. You can use voice control to turn the lights on and off with an Amazon Echo device, but you can’t use it to control the camera, unfortunately.

  • Do I need a contract to use Kuna cameras?

No. You can sign up for a Kuna Premium subscription and cancel at any time, even if you paid annually.
