Did you know there’s a case of identity fraud every two seconds?1 In 2020 alone, over 150 million people were affected by data breaches.2 The internet, which we all use on a daily basis, is becoming a frightening place.

That’s why savvy consumers — like you — are looking to protect themselves. Many are turning to virtual private networks, or VPNs for short, to make sure their digital goings-on are protected from prying eyes. You can read more about what VPNs are and what they do in our guide to virtual private networks, but if you’re ready to start making decisions, it makes sense to start with one of the best-known cybersecurity providers out there — Norton.

Norton is one of the most well-known names in cybersecurity. They offer world-class antivirus protection as well as one of the top identity theft protection services we’ve reviewed. But what about their NortonVPN service? How does it stand up to the competition?

To find out, I’m breaking down their plans, packages, and prices. Let’s see if NortonVPN makes sense for you and your budget.

NortonVPN Snapshot

NortonVPN offers online safety and security at a reasonable price — but that’s about it. If you’re looking for bells and whistles, you might be better served elsewhere.

FYI: If you’re looking for some razzle-dazzle, maybe check out our review of NordVPN or our Encrypt.me analysis. Both of these services offer some pretty interesting features and add-ons.

That said, Norton brings a solid, user-friendly service to the table. Here’s what they’re offering.

NortonVPN Key Features:

  • Affordable Pricing
  • Reliable Safety
  • Easily Accessible App
  • Great User Experience
  • Integration into Norton’s Suite of Cybersecurity Protections

I’m sure that first bullet point caught your attention, so let’s dive a little deeper into NortonVPN’s pricing structure. Spoiler: NortonVPN is one of the cheapest VPN products available.

NortonVPN Subscription Pricing

A lot of VPN services base their pricing on the duration of your subscription. The longer you sign up for, the better your savings. You don’t really need a degree in finance to understand it. That said, NortonVPN’s pricing structure has less to do with how long you sign up for and more to do with how many devices you want to connect with their service. This chart should make it pretty clear.

NortonVPN Plans

Number of Devices Monthly Cost Annual Cost
1 $4.99 $39.99*
5 $7.99 $39.99*
10 $9.99 $59.99

*Note: NortonVPN is currently running a deal on its annual subscription packages. We do not know how long the deal will last.

As you can see, their monthly costs are pretty reasonable, but the annual subscription will save you a little bit of cash. How much you’re going to pay out-of-pocket, though, depends on if you want to protect a single laptop or an entire server room.

NortonVPN Payment Options

So let’s say you want to protect up to five devices on a month-to-month basis. You know it’s going to cost about $8 per month, but how are you going to pay for it?

Traditional credit or debit will work just fine for NortonVPN. They also accept PayPal transactions if you already have an account set up there. What’s glaringly missing, though, is the capacity for accepting cryptocurrency.

FYI: Want to pay with cryptocurrency? Check out our review of ExpressVPN. ExpressVPN is our top-rated VPN, and they really prioritize your privacy.

If you’re in the market for a VPN, you’re probably placing a heavy premium on anonymity. Unfortunately, in order to use NortonVPN, you’re going to have to cough up your credit card info. Is this going to be a problem for most folks just looking to shore up their digital security a bit? No, not necessarily, but if you need a service that can’t be traced back to you, Norton might not be the one.3

NortonVPN Deals and Discounts

If you’re looking to save a buck or two, you’re really in luck if you’re looking at NortonVPN. Right now, they’re offering some pretty deep discounts on their annual subscriptions. Check out the chart below for more details.

NortonVPN Savings

Number of Devices Annual Cost Savings
1 $39.99 $10 off
5 $39.99 $40 off
10 $59.99 $40 off

The Best NortonVPN Deal

So normally I’d suggest signing up for a month or two to get a feel for the service and see if it’s right for you. However, in NortonVPN’s case, I’m recommending that you grab an annual subscription.

The reason why I recommend springing for an annual NortonVPN plan is because Norton offers a nearly unheard of 60-day, money-back guarantee on all of their annual subscription plans. That means if you shell out a little bit more cash up front, you can test their services for almost two entire months risk-free. That’s more than enough time to figure out if NortonVPN is going to perform to your standards and offer the functionality you need.

So that brings us to the final question — is NortonVPN worth it?

Pro Tip: If you choose NortonVPN’s annual subscription, you’ll get a very generous 60-day, money-back guarantee. To put this in perspective, I typically only see 30-day guarantees in the VPN industry, and even those are rare.

NortonVPN — Overall Value

So here’s the thing: when I unpacked NortonVPN, I thought there was a lot to like. Their security was impeccable, and their user experience was nearly flawless. However; they still left a lot to be desired in regards to customization and additional options.

That said, it’s reasonable to view NortonVPN as a piece of a much larger pie. The Norton brand offers a comprehensive suite of cybersecurity protections, including antivirus software and identity theft protection. As a stand-alone service, NortonVPN is not the best; however, if you view it in the proper context, it’s a valuable brick in your privacy and security bulwark.

FYI: Read my latest hands-on Norton LifeLock identity protection review to see how it offers additional layers of security and a little extra peace of mind.

So the price point is on par with what you’re getting. At the end of the day, a $5 per month VPN is hard to argue with. For that price you’re going to shore up your digital security significantly, and you’re never going to have to think about it.

NortonVPN runs silently in the background and requires no fiddling with to optimize. It just works right out of the box. For most folks, NortonVPN will get the job done just fine. And if you want to integrate it into a larger security landscape, you’ll be doing even better.
