Samsung Home Security Ratings

What happens when consumer electronics heavyweight Samsung teams up with the home security giant ADT? You get one powerful solution for home total protection and automation. Samsung home security offers DIY installs, no-long contracts, and more add-ons than you can shake a stick at. Also, you can tap into ADT’s hardware and monitoring services. Unfortunately, the up-front costs can rack up quick. See what our experts say in our Samsung home security review.

  • One year limited warranty
  • Extensive support for third-party smart home devices
  • ADT home security hardware
  • Affordable professional monitoring plans
  • Plans are not required to use hardware
  • Simple installation

  • High upfront costs
  • Video surveillance hardware is only available through third-party manufacturers
  • More focused on home automation than home security

Samsung has an excellent reputation as an electronics and technology manufacturer, and the attention to detail shows through in their home protection and smart home products. They leverage ADT’s experience in home security systems with their SmartThings smart home ecosystem. With both companies being so well-established, you end up with a tried and true solution that has plenty of support if you run into any difficulties.

The three available plans have affordable monthly costs, but you are responsible for the costs of the home security starter kit, as well as any add-on devices you’d like to add. The base performance of the security system and its software is excellent, but Samsung’s solution really shines when you start to add smart devices into the equation. It’s designed to make adding new devices as simple and straightforward as possible, so your home security and automation system grows with your changing needs.

You also have the opportunity to add-on value-added services such as 24/7 professional monitoring. They react to alarms even if you’re not awake or anywhere near your home, so you can have a prompt response if someone breaks in or a fire starts.

Features and Technology

Optional ADT Professional Monitoring Services

The home security professionals at ADT can monitor everything from potential leaks to a break-in. They keep a close eye on your home even when you’re asleep, so you don’t have to add more stress to your life. Some of the situations that they look out for include panic alerts and fire alerts. They get in touch with emergency services and contact you to apprise you of the situation.

Mobile Alerts

Keep track of your home security system status and your smart home devices through the Samsung SmartThings app. You get alerted based on specific activities, like motion being detected while the system is armed.

Wireless Technology

Your home security system communicates without any wires, so you don’t need a phone line or ethernet cables for everything to work correctly.

Home Automation Customization

Samsung makes a number of smart home devices itself and has third-party compatibility with the Works With SmartThings standard. You can transform your house into a smart home while using this security hub. You can enable voice control through Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, and the app allows you to set up routines for Good Morning, Good Bye, Good Night and other common daily scenarios.

Ease of Use

Setting up this home security system is incredibly straightforward. Samsung has a knack for user-friendliness, and it shows through with the easy installation of these products. In some cases, all you need to do is scan a QR code to get it set up and connected to the central hub.

The DIY installation process also makes it possible to continually add new hardware as your home automation, and security needs change. You can shift the position of your sensors, add in a smart thermostat or change your lighting to energy efficient smart lights. Third-party smart home devices are often natively supported by the SmartThings app and ecosystem.

Customer Service

Samsung has extensive customer service resources available, although you may run into some situations where it’s difficult to find someone with a lot of experience with home security. However, they do have a good understanding of their home automation ecosystem and how the various devices work together. They offer online self-service resources such as FAQs, guides, and product manuals. An online community of home security subscribers may also end up having the assistance that you need.

If you end up contacting Samsung directly, you have access to 24/7 live chat support, email support with a 24 hour response time, and phone support. They also welcome inquiries via Twitter or Facebook if you’d rather message the company on a social network.

None of the equipment is included in these home security and automation plans, so be aware that you have an additional upfront cost of $499 for the starter kit. Samsung frequently has promotions that take $100 off of this price.

Home and Life Safety Monitoring – $14.99/month

This plan covers home security and protection. You don’t get much in the way of home automation, but you do have 24/7 professional monitoring that covers hazards such as fire, carbon monoxide, and water leaks.

Home Security Monitoring – $24.99/month

You receive home security monitoring that covers panic alerts and intrusion detection.

Total Security Monitoring – $34.99/month

This plan combines the previous two, so you have a complete monitoring solution available.

Keep in mind that you don’t need a professional monitoring plan alongside your Samsung home security system. You do have the option of self-monitoring the alarms and alerts and acting upon that information. None of these plans have long-term contracts, so you can choose a month-to-month plan.

The starter package includes enough equipment to cover your basic home security and safety needs.

ADT Security Hub – This hub acts as the centralized control panel for your security system. The 7-inch display gives you plenty of information about your home’s status, and the touchscreen controls are easy to use. It includes a siren and has dual-encryption for the wireless communication between it and the other devices in the household. Battery and cellular data backup keep you covered in the event of a power outage or Wi-Fi signal loss.

2 Door and Window Detectors – These detectors send an alert if someone opens the door or window that it’s attached to while the system is armed.

Motion Detector – If someone is moving through your house when no one is supposed to be up and moving around, you’ll find out about it quickly.

LTE Cellular Backup Module – This device gets your security system connected to mobile data in the event of Wi-Fi signal loss.

Add-on Equipment

You have a lot of optional equipment to choose from, as Samsung’s SmartThings devices are all compatible with the ADT home security hardware. Thankfully, they have several kits available that bundle together commonly used devices. The customization options that Samsung’s home security offers make it an excellent option when you want a comprehensive home automation system alongside basic security features.

Samsung SmartThings ADT Home Safety Expansion Pack $169.99

This expansion pack includes the carbon monoxide alarm, water leak detector and smoke alarm by ADT. These devices monitor your home and sound an 85-decibel alarm when high temperatures, smoke, carbon monoxide or water gets detected. These devices can also use voice alerts and send notifications. You do need the ADT Security Hub for these devices to function properly, so you can’t skip the starter kit.

Samsung SmartThings ADT Carbon Monoxide Alarm $74.99

Add more carbon monoxide alarms to the areas most at risk.

ADT Door and Window Detector $19.99

Expand beyond the base set of detectors to cover more entry points in your home.

Don’t let at-risk spots go unprotected. Add more motion sensors throughout your home.

Keychain Remote $24.99

Easily arm and disarm your security system without using the app or heading to the keypad.

Water Leak Detector $34.99

Water damage can cause a lot of expensive issues, so stop it as soon as it starts with a timely notification from the water leak sensor.

Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor $39.99

This is the motion sensor designed to work with the SmartThings hub.

Samsung SmartThings Dimming Outlet  $44.99

This dimming outlet can be controlled remotely via the SmartThings app.

GE Outdoor Light Plug and Control Power Outlet $44

Add some smarts to your outdoor lighting and outlets.

Aeotec Siren (Gen 5) $49.99

Deter criminals and ensure that your entire family hears alarms in an emergency with the help of this 105 decibel siren with stroke lighting.

GE In-Wall Smart Switch (ZigBee) $52

Turn your light switches into smart switches.

Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit $199

If you don’t have any interest in the professional monitoring features that are available with the ADT security product, and you want to move forward with a heavy smart home focus, this kit may suit your needs better. It uses the Samsung SmartThings Hug rather than the ADT Security control panel. You get two SmartThings Multipurpose sensors that work on your windows and doors. While they can work for intrusion detection, their primary purpose is to let you control lights, temperature and other home systems based on their status.

The SmartThings Motion Sensor falls under the same type of usage. Finally, you get a SmartThings outlet that gives you remote control over the devices connected to it.

Samsung made the right decision when it teamed up with ADT Home Security. The base equipment kit and the home safety expansion kit are excellent starting points for your home safety and security measures. You can opt for several home monitoring packages if you’d like to move from self-monitored to professional monitoring. Samsung’s home automation hardware is excellent, and they support a range of third-party devices for expansion.
