Moni Home Security: What Happened to Moni Security?

If you’ve been reading security blogs like ours lately, you may have noticed that a particular brand name has gone missing: MONI Security. Once among our recommended security solutions, MONI Security now seems to have disappeared from the face of the Earth. So what happened to MONI Security? What are some MONI Security alternatives? You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. Let’s dive in.

What Happened to MONI Security?

First things first: where did MONI Security go, anyway?

Well, nowhere, actually. It just changed its name.

MONI Security rebranded as Brinks Home Security after purchasing the Brinks brand identity last year. In other words, MONI Security wasn’t acquired by Brinks — it just bought the Brinks name and rebranded under that name.

There was a Brinks Home Security in existence years ago, but it rebranded itself in the late 1990s and was later acquired by ADT. This new Brinks Home Security isn’t actually the descendent of that original Brinks at all — again, it’s just MONI Security under a new name. Did you get all of that?

With that taken care of, you probably have a pretty good idea of what the best MONI Security “alternative” is. But we’ve got a few picks to share with you, so let’s check out the list — right after we take a moment to jog our memories regarding MONI’s features.

What Were the Features of MONI Home Security Systems?

Like many of its competitors, MONI offered security hardware backed by 24/7 monitoring. The MONI systems live on, of course, through Brinks, which still offers the combination of smart security detection and alert products and the vigilant 24/7 expert monitoring. Customers can be alerted to security concerns through their phones, which can run a corresponding mobile app.

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • Intruder detection
  • Video cameras
  • Management via mobile app
  • Nest brand smart home devices

The Best MONI Security Alternatives

1. Brinks Home Security

The best MONI Security alternative isn’t really an “alternative” at all — it’s the real deal! As we explained above, Brinks Home Security is MONI Security under a new brand name. Little else has changed: as Brinks’ website says, it’s “the same trusted experts, the same user-friendly products” as before.

Brinks gives its customers a choice between DIY and professional installation. Its systems rely on smart security products that communicate wireless. Let’s take another look at that list of features, shall we?

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • Intruder detection
  • Video cameras
  • Management via mobile app
  • Nest brand smart home devices

2. SimpliSafe

If you’re the sort of person who prefers a system that you can install yourself, then you’ll like SimpliSafe. Like Brinks (formerly MONI), SimpliSafe puts an emphasis on wireless smart devices that work together to manage your home’s security (and a few other things, too, like temperature and light switches).

SimpliSafe is a great MONI alternative (or a great Brinks alternative, if you prefer), and it also happens to be quite affordable. Relative to its competitors, SimpliSafe is a steal — but it’s still reliable enough to make sure that there’s no theft happening to you!

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • Intruder detection
  • Video cameras
  • Motion sensors
  • Management via mobile app
  • Smart home devices and features

3. ADT

ADT offers its customers customized security solutions and professional installation. ADT systems offer many of the same features at Brinks systems (and therefore, of course, many of the same features as the old MONI systems), including intruder detection, 24/7 monitoring, and mobile app management.

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • Intruder detection
  • Video cameras
  • Management via mobile app
  • Smart home security devices
  • Professional installation

4. FrontPoint

Like SimpliSafe, FrontPoint is a system that you install yourself. Everything is wireless, so installation isn’t too tough and doesn’t require any special tools or anything like that. Once everything is where it should be, you can count on the folks at FrontPoint to keep tabs on your system 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

FrontPoint’s systems rely on wireless connections, just like the Brinks systems do. To ensure that you’re always protected, the FrontPoint hub can switch seamlessly back and forth between Wi-Fi and 3G connections.

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • Intruder detection
  • Video cameras
  • Management via mobile app
  • Smart home devices and features

5. Vivint

If you’re inclined to take up Brinks on their professional installation offer, you may also want to consider Vivint. Like ADT, Vivint offers professional installation of your security system, so you can save yourself some trouble and be sure that things are done right.

Vivint offers smart locks and other high-tech devices. However, it does demand a lengthy commitment from its customers: while its competitors tend to ask for three-year contracts for new customers, Vivint demands a full two years more than that in its standard five-year starter contract.

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • Intruder detection
  • Video cameras
  • Management via mobile app
  • Smart home security devices
  • Professional installation
