Driveway Security and Alarms
Your best line of defense against crime is to have security systems in place that will stop it before it gets to you. That's exactly what a driveway alarm will do—help stop a criminal before he/she enters your home or gets any further onto your property.
What Is a Driveway Alarm?
A driveway alarm is a security device that detects motion. They are usually wireless (but not always) and will send you an alert when activity in your driveway is detected. Some driveway alarms are designed to detect many types of intrusions such as people, animals, and/or vehicles.
Why Is Driveway Security Important?
Driveway security is important because it warns you that someone has entered your property and that a potential crime could occur which allows you to proactively handle the situation in advance. This is your first line of defense when it comes to protecting your family and your property.
How Do Driveway Alarms Work?
A driveway alarm has two components which are a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is usually battery powered and hidden somewhere on the side of a driveway or around the entrance. The receiver is generally kept in the home and it's plugged into a power outlet. There are also some receivers that are wireless. When the transmitter detects motion, it sends a signal to the receiver, which will then notify the homeowner.
Types of Driveway Alarm Sensors
There are four types of driveway alarm sensors, and they each work differently.
Infrared Driveway Sensors
The infrared driveway sensors are usually wireless and use heat to detect motion from people, animals, and vehicles. These sensors work by sending a signal whenever a warm heat signature passes through its infrared beam. An infrared driveway sensor is fairly inexpensive and extremely easy to install.
Magnetic Probe Driveway Sensors
Magnetic probe driveway sensors are either wired or wireless and can detect metal only. This helps prevent false alarms from animals, etc. but you won't be notified if a person walks onto your driveway though. This type of driveway alarm is hidden once installed and costs more than other types of driveway alarms.
Rubber Hose Driveway Sensor
These driveway sensors are encased in a soft rubber hose and are used to detect vehicles. When a vehicle drives over the hose, it pushes down on the sensor, sends a signal to the receiver, and notifies the homeowner.
Photo Beam Sensors
A driveway alarm that uses a photo beam sensor (two sensors placed at opposite ends) will notify the homeowner only after the beams from all the sensors are broken at the same time. This helps eliminate false alarms. This is because animals can't break both beams at the same time.
Driveway Security Options
Aside from driveway security alarms and sensors, there are other security features you can have installed to add additional layers of security to your home.
Garage Door Sensors
Garage door sensors are alarms specifically designed to protect your garage. This feature will show your garage as a zone of your house. And it will alert you if your garage door has been opened unexpectedly.
Motion Sensor Lights
Motion sensor lights for your driveway are either wired or wireless and instantly come on when motion is detected. These are great for deterring crime.
Outdoor Security Cameras
Outdoor security cameras are either wired or wireless and can be used as part of an entire home security system or as a standalone security feature. Outdoor security cameras are great for the 24/7 monitoring of your home remotely or from within using an associated mobile app. Having access to an outdoor security camera will enable you to react accordingly to any given situation because you will be able to view the camera's video feed to see what's causing the alert.
Driveway Security Gate
Driveway security gates help keep unwanted visitors off your property. These work by requiring all authorized persons to use a gate remote or security code to open the gate for entry. To exit the property, you simply pull up to the gate and it will open automatically.
