The S.A.F.E. Home Newborn Project... The unique concept of educating parents through the
S.A.F.E. Home Newborn Project has had the most significance in drawing attention to the
fire and burn problem in America. Fire educators find new parents are more receptive
to the safety issues that protect the precious life they have brought into this world.
In some communities, the alarms are distributed through the hospital or fire
department along with important fire safety/prevention literature. In other communities, the fire department will
install the alarm gift and educate the family on fire safety practices, look for potential
fire hazards, and discuss the best evacuation procedures to follow in case a fire starts
in the home.
The
S.A.F.E. Home Child Education Project...A
smoke detector give-away program to teach the importance of smoke alarms and fire safety
practices to young children. During Fire Prevention school demonstrations, fire
prevention educators will distribute smoke alarms to all kindergarten children in an
elementary school or preschool. This places
another smoke alarm in the home; and the child's smoke alarm gift is a constant reminder
to the child to follow the fire safety practices taught to them. The following year
the recipients of the smoke alarm gift bring in the battery from their own smoke alarm for
a battery replacement. These children are
learning "hands-on" their smoke alarm will not warn them of a fire if the alarm
is not in working condition.
Senior Citizens Project...A smoke
detector give-away program to help senior adults prevent and survive a fire. Senior Citizens Centers, Senior Clubs, church
organizations, and neighborhood associations can be the perfect forum for a fire safety
presentation. Meals on Wheels, Home Health Care Associations and Neighborhood Block
Organizations can be utilized to identify and reach inactive seniors who are unable to
participate in organized seniors' groups.
General Give-away Project...Through a
S.A.F.E. Home community partnership promotion in local media publications, fire department
newsletters, radio Public Service Announcements, and word of mouth, residents can acquire
a free smoke alarm if needed through the local fire department or designated service. Usually programs are targeting low income
residents. Ultimate goal is to make sure
everyone has a working smoke alarm in their home.
Corporate Fire Prevention Project...Employees
are offered discounted smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as a great
"attention-getter" in educating employees and their families of the importance
of safety awareness and prevention (on the job and at home). A S.A.F.E. Home Newborn
Program can be established giving every expectant employee a smoke alarm for the nursery.
